Melissa Keyzer for Buckeye Union School Board

Welcome neighbors! This is a page I've created for the public to learn more about me and why I am running for a seat on the Buckeye Union School Board. I invite you to read more about me, and also to email me with your questions, thoughts, concerns, and hopes for the future of our school district. I am committed to always being available to our community; to listening to what parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators, and community members have to say.

Welcome to

This is Buckeye

BUSD Map.png

The Buckeye Union School District (BUSD) is the elementary (Kindergarten through 8th grade) school district that covers the region shown on this map. There are 8 school sites in our district, 2 of which house two distinct schools, giving our district a total of 10 schools. We are a close neighbor to the Rescue School District, which spans the area north of Buckeye. Both of these K-8 elementary school districts are separate from but feed into the El Dorado Union High School District, which spans a large region reaching east almost to Tahoe.

Buckeye District schools are:

Blue Oak Elementary School (K-5th)

Buckeye Elementary School (K-5th)

Buckeye Union Mandarin Immersion Charter School (K-6th)

Camerado Springs Middle School International Baccalaureate World School (6th-8th)

Oak Meadow Elementary School (K-5th)

Rolling Hills Middle School (6th-8th)

Silva Valley Elementary School (K-5th)

Valley View Charter Montessori International Baccalaureate World School (6th-8th)

Valley View Charter Montessori Elementary Grades (K-5th)

William Brooks Elementary School (K-5th)

I am a long-time Buckeye parent, and I will be for another five years. I love our community, and I love our little school district. It's home. It's where all four of my children (all boys!) are continuing to receive their entire school education, from Kindergarten up to 8th grade. I now have one son in high school and three sons still in Buckeye schools (a 4th grader at Brooks, and a 6th and an 8th grader at Rolling Hills). Our school district is phenomenal. It's hard to overstate how lucky we are to live in this community and have such strong schools available to our children. When I was in college and then in law school, I volunteered and worked in schools in other parts of California. I've seen the challenges and struggles of school districts, and I take nothing we have here for granted. When I was asked, after years of being a classroom volunteer at my children's school, to step up to run the Buckeye Foundation, I didn't hesitate. I have been present at our district board meetings and have worked closely with the schools and district. Whatever I can do to support and strengthen our school district, I am doing and will continue to do. As Board Member Yoffie has stated, our schools reflect the soul of our community. I 100% agree. Our community values strong, safe, healthy schools. Our community values and treasures our children. We have a long tradition of excellent leadership in our school district, of putting our kids first, and making sure that their needs are at the heart of every decision we make. And the results speak for themselves. Our schools routinely win awards and acknowledgement on a state and even national level. I am proud to have been a part of that success in recent years, and I would be honored to continue my service to Buckeye as a board member, guaranteeing that all of our children receive the best we can give them.

Official Candidate Statement (as it will appear in the Voter Information Guide)

Each of our Buckeye District schools is an award-winning example of what public education strives to be. From the time my oldest son began kindergarten in 2014, I’ve devoted my energy to helping make our schools even better. I’ve been a “full-time volunteer,” working closely with the Buckeye School District both inside and outside the classrooms. In 2018, I was recruited to lead the Buckeye Education Foundation, the non-profit that supports all Buckeye District schools by supplying grants to the District, schools, and teachers, and hosting district-wide events. I’ve thus made it a priority to keep current with all Buckeye District issues, regularly attending board meetings and meeting with District administrators and staff.
Buckeye has benefitted from decades of strong governance, demonstrated by consistently high state-wide performance ratings and achievement awards. I’m grateful that my own children continue to benefit from Buckeye’s forward-thinking planning and careful stewardship of our tax dollars. After 10 years of active involvement in Buckeye’s operation, I feel uniquely prepared to step into the role of board member. I would be honored to carry on the Buckeye tradition of excellence in our community, to keep our children thriving, and to help ensure the brightest possible future for every Buckeye Union School District student.
